Stranger Things season 5 will be the show's final, but the Netflix series cannot end without answering one big Vecna mystery. The hit show Stranger Things debuted on Netflix in 2016 and follows the story of a group of people from Hawkins, Indiana, and their encounters with an alternate world called “the Upside Down.” The show has seen some interesting villains over the years, from Stranger Things’ Demogorgons to evil scientists with a paternal streak. However, season 4 introduced Stranger Things’ most powerful villain yet, Henry Creel, who was corrupted by the Upside Down and became Vecna.
Stranger Things season 4 became a pop culture event, and the finale was so famous that Eddie’s “Master of Puppets” scene was even played at Metallica’s concert. With stakes even higher for the final season, it's interesting to predict how Stranger Things will end after 5 seasons, and if there will be even more character deaths at the hands of Vecna. However, there is one particular burning question about Vecna that Stranger Things has left unanswered regarding the origins of his powers.
Stranger Things Still Hasn’t Explained How Henry Got Powers
Henry's Childhood Has Only Partially Been Shown
With season 5 supposedly releasing in 2025, Stranger Things has yet to explain how Henry actually got his powers. The timeline for Stranger Things was confusing in season 4 as it presented flashbacks that explained Vecna’s origins. As a child, Henry Creel has an affinity for spiders and haunts his household with his powers, even tormenting his father for his actions in the war. Henry was a young boy who already had powers when he killed his family, and his father was blamed for their deaths, leaving Henry to be sent to the lab, where he meets Dr Martin Brenner.
Henry Creel's Powers | Description |
---|---|
Mind reading | Henry sees into the minds of others to torment them. |
Creating mental realms | Vecna created his own mind lair and can create others tailored to their memories. |
Hallucinations | He can cause his victims to hallucinate. |
Astral projection | Like Eleven, Henry can project himself outside his physical body. |
Telekinesis | Henry can move objects and beings without touching them, including having his victims float in midair. |
Regeneration | Due to his transformation, Henry can heal quickly from minor wounds and faster than humans for major wounds. |
Brenner then trained Henry’s powers and created more powered children, including Eleven, who sent Henry to the Upside Down after the Lab Massacre. Therefore, so far, Stranger Things has only shown Henry’s childhood from the moment they enter the Creel house in Indiana and has not explained how Henry gained his powers prior. However, a Stranger Things filming update teased Vecna’s state in season 5, which shows Henry may return as a humanoid in a suit, as well as his usual Vecna form, showing that season 5 may address his power’s origins to set up his battle with Eleven.
The Origins Of Henry’s Powers Are What Set Him Apart From Eleven
Henry Is Fueled By Hate Whereas Eleven Thrives When Supported
The origin of Henry’s powers sets him apart from Eleven because they seem to have no visible cause thus far. Eleven’s powers were shown and explained from the beginning to have been developed by Martin Brenner’s experiments on her birth mother regarding MK Ultra, leading to the birth of Jane (Eleven’s real name). However, while Stranger Things has managed to avoid Game of Thrones’ Night King problem by explaining Vecna’s powers from the start, the show still has not explained their origins, leaving it a mystery to be solved in season 5 before Eleven and Vecna’s inevitable and conclusive re-match.
Hopper’s return in Stranger Things season 5 may even make Eleven’s powers stronger, as Eleven’s powers have been shown to thrive when she has a support system.
Furthermore, Hopper’s return in Stranger Things season 5 may even make Eleven’s powers stronger, as Eleven’s powers have been shown to thrive when she has a support system. This could lead to a more powerful Eleven in season 5, which Vecna will have to match somehow. By explaining the origin of Vecna’s powers in season 5, there could be a way that Vecna enhances his own abilities too, possibly through hateful means – as we know his powers thrive on revenge, so he is more prepared to battle Eleven, especially following his defeat at the end of season 4.
There’s No Way Stranger Things Ends Without Revealing More About Henry’s Powers
Season 5 Will Most Likely Reveal The Origins Of Henry's Powers
There is no way that Stranger Things will conclude its fifth and final season without revealing more about Henry’s powers, as it is an important part of the show. As one of the biggest mysteries, Henry’s powers’ origins are one of the few unanswered questions that many are hoping will be addressed in season 5. With season 5 set photos possibly showing a Stranger Things flashback, there could be a chance for Vecna to have his own flashback too, which can reveal just how he became so powerful without the MK Ultra experiments that Eleven was subjected to years later.

With filming still underway, hopefully, clues will drop soon regarding Vecna’s storyline, although Stranger Things’ Vecna actor Jamie Bower has teased season 5’s wait will be worth it. Bower claimed that “If you thought last season was nuts, this season is just out of control, wild” and that “It’s bigger. It’s just completely insane.” Bower’s comments may be addressing the overall season, but there is hope that he could be referring to Vecna’s story, as Bower may know the origin of Vecna’s powers. If this is to be believed, then Stranger Things season 5 will certainly deliver more than expected.
